Intro page

Ok so I appologise in advance for my question as I am sure some of you will think it is silly. I am a novice and whilst I have used wordpress for some time, I am new to MU and buddypress in particular.
I want to create a site similar to Edublogs (as so many do I hear you cry!!) but my question is simple.
When I install buddypress on MU, I obviously have to activate the plugin. The main site should then be formatted with an appropriate template I presume.
The question is, how do I best create start pages that are simple in design and explain what we offer? The home page can be set to any that I want but I want it to look nothing like a blog itself…
In effect I want to make the main website http://www.community1stop.com the start page for people to then sign up to being able to use buddypress and other associated plugins.
Does this make any sense or am I rambling
