Is BuddyPress right for me?

I run a small network called the Youth Bloggers Network, a WordPress and bbPress powered site which currently lacks some features that BuddyPress offers. I am wondering if using WordPress MU and BuddyPress is the best option for my network: http://youthbloggers.net/.
People who join the network usually have their own blog already, so the WordPress MU part is not necessary for me. However, the features BuddyPress provides including Friends, Private Messaging, and Groups appeal to me very much. I am wondering if it is worth switching over to BuddyPress right now. I understand that it is still under development and requires a lot of work to get things up and running – including a theme that matches the current look of my site.
Are there any BuddyPress users willing to share their thoughts on BuddyPress, and if they think it is right for me?
