Is BuddyPress right for this project?

Hey WP pro’s – got a question regarding a big site challenge:

Situation: Need to build a site for 1000+ members with profile pages. Imagine a company where each salesman has their own page. The profile pages will allow them to post information, links, videos, etc. on a single page with their own url off the site. I also need logged in members to have access to other areas of the site based on their membership level. This isn’t designed to be a social network, but just have landing pages for each person for use in the biz.

Question: Do I use a membership plugin from a place like iThemes, or BuddyPress? I’m not using a theme, but building the site on a starter theme (Roots). Need this to be responsive, and I need to be able to style.

    Really appreciate any feedback!

BuddyPress could be used for this, with some customizing. You’ll have to elaborate on what you mean by “with their own url off the site”.

I also need logged in members to have access to other areas of the site based on their membership level.

A membership plugin will be necessary for this.

Need this to be responsive, and I need to be able to style.

That all comes down to the theme you pick. Whether you use BuddyPress or a membership plugin or neither makes very little difference. Responsive layout is all determined by the theme.

    Thanks man.

What I mean by “their own url” is simply: http://samplesite.com/tom-jones. That type of thing.

Regarding the membership plugin, is there one out there that plays nicely with BuddyPress?

Responsive…I’m not using a theme. I want to style from scratch. That’s how I do all WP sites. Does BuddyPress allow this?

For their own URL, this will happen automatically with BuddyPress. So to use your example, by default it would be: http://samplesite.com/members/tom-jones

These two membership plugins are both known to play well with BP:

    Membership 2 Pro

    Home

Responsive.. sounds cool. Yeah BuddyPress will adopt your theme just like any other plugin. So you can design the theme from scratch. BuddyPress has its own HTML content that it will inject into the page via the_content, so you can style it with that in mind. It has its own stylesheet that you can build around, or deregister if you wanna go all out with your custom styles.

Sweet man…sounds like this is the way to go.

I’ll check it out and post back on progress if this is still open in a couple weeks.

    I appreciate the info!

The WPMU one is good, I use that in tandem with Buddypress on one of my sites – there’s a range of other goodens too that might be worth a look at – http://www.ventureharbour.com/membership-plugins-for-wordpress/
