ISSUE: Group Forum Post – REPLY FROM ELSEWHERE (Activity Stream) – REPLY Doesn’t Go Back to Forum
-
This seems to be an issue and is especially confusing. Here is the scenario:
Somebody posts in a Group Forum –>
The Group Forum Posts Shows up in the Activity STream –>
Somebody responds to the ACTVITIY STREAM posting of the ORIGINAL GROUP FORUM POST (not in the forum)–>
THE REPLY/response NEVER shows back up in/under the ORIGINAL GROUP FORUM POST –>
Causing confusion and the possiblity of missed information.
Is there a quick fix/hack for this scenario? I searched for this on buddypress community and did not find an answer.

@pisanojm check out this plugin: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/buddypress-group-forum-extras/
Thanks guys. Tried the plugin. Activated. Modified the theme. No dice here. Is it as simple as activating that plugin and adding that one single line to the groups/forum/topic.php file?
@takeo I didn’t do any of the theme edits yet, but the activity stream to forum replies worked out of the box for me.
Only tried with WP3.0RC & BP 1.2.4.1Ok.. I’ve actived the plugin, activated the “BuddyPress Forums Extras – Activity” Assuming this is the corrective plugin… Didn’t work, but I’m going to assume I didn’t modify the theme, so I need to do that… running through the read me now…
@pisanojm, @takeo really sorry, I activated a few plugins today for testing, this is the one that worked out of the box for me https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-activity-as-blog-comments/
Doesn’t let me post code…
My code to look for in the plugin extras page is different.I have a do action bp_after_group_forum_topic_posts in the middle of what to look for…
thekmen… Did the plugin fix the issue with replying to a forum post in the “group stream” and importing it back into the Group Forum?
Looks like it won’t work for what I’m talking about @r-a-y is on the right track in pointing me… just some semantics here with the code..
Ok… going back through this the plugin suggested by @thekmen actually says it will do what I’m trying to make it do with the “activity” plugin… @r-a-y said in his post, not possible yet… I’m now saying that the code to find and replace in the plugin is different than what is in the topic.php file… If we can get that to work, it should work… maybe?
@pisanojm, formatting pretty messed up on this post, so hope you can read this.
Yes, I’m sure it is the latest plugin I mentioned that puts activity stream replies to forum posts into the correct forum thread.Yeah, I just realized the code I posted broke this thread, so I deleted the post
I’m convinced of it as well, I was just reading some posts at the plugin group, can’t seem to find the answer though… my default topic.php code is different than that in the search and replace, I’ve tried a couple of things but “no dice” yet…
@pisanojm with the default theme, I made no theme edits, I did try a few different plugins today but I’m now sure it is the BuddyPress Activity Stream as Blog Comments plugin that worked for me.
@thekmen I’m talking about the first plugin you mentioned… the 2nd one, https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-activity-as-blog-comments/, doesn’t look like it would do what I’m looking for… are you sure you are not talking about the first one you mentioned:https://buddypress.org/community/groups/buddypress-group-forum-extras/ ??
@thekemen did it mess anything else up for you? I may just try it and see what happens… I’m not looking for “blog comments” just groupstream-to-original-forum post/reply…
How about eliminating the reply function from the activity stream, that way users can only click on link to original questions or post and reply in there as opposed to replying in the activity stream. Would that solve the problem for you @Pisanojm
@LwEEs … yes it would be easy to pull, but it would be better if I could find a way to make it work as I’m trying too…that is –>
Post a forum topic –>
Reply in forum or reply in Group THREAD –>
Appears in forum topic in next sequence…I tried both plugins. I couldn’t get either one to work. What I’m looking for is, when a forum post shows up in the activity stream and someone comments on it in the activity stream (using the reply button)… I want that reply to show up in the original forum thread. The fact that this doesn’t happen by default is, to me, a huge usability issue with BuddyPress. But that’s another issue. Is either of the plugins in this thread meant to accomplish that? Neither one did. I’m using BP 1.2.4.1 with WP 3.0 RC2 in single mode (not network mode) with a child theme. The parent theme is bp-default. I copied the included theme files (the “activitycomments” directory) into my child theme folder. Unfortunately, the documentation wasn’t much help. What was your process @thekmen?
I just sent the plugin creator the question here: https://buddypress.org/community/members/nuprn1/
We both are trying to accomplish the same thing… Only I’m not using RC2 2.9.2 ~Last STable It’s the right plugin, we just can’t seem to implement it @David LewisI don’t imagine it would be related to the WordPress version… but you never know. One thing I find confusing is the instruction to replace the “activitycomments” folder in the default theme. BuddyPress 1.2.4.1 does not have such a folder in it’s default theme.
I guess I could answer my own question about compatibility by setting up a test site with 2.9.2 and 1.2.4.1. Maybe I’ll do that this weekend.
Let me see if I can’t help out here… both plugins in question require theme edits and only built against the default theme – so there might be discrepancies if you use something else.
Remember the activity stream takes an excerpt copy of the content (forum topic, post, blog comment) for its own use. This is why there is confusing/division of conversations. IMHO – I would either disable activity stream commenting for forum topics/post/blogs or edit the activity/entry.php theme file
Activity as Blog Comments:
This will replace the wp-comment system and only use the activity stream as your blog commenting system. for an example: http://etivite.com/2010/04/what-does-it-mean/ (while still retaining the regular wp-comment for admins or whatever wp_cap you set it as).BuddyPress Forums Extras – Activity (subplugin)
Will only display a link that expands when clicked to show the tagged activity stream content for a given new_forum_post. for example: http://etivite.com/groups/test-group/forum/topic/one-more/ and click on “View Activity Replies to this Post” No syncing of data from the activity stream back into the forum.A new plugin is in the works ( with the help of @r-a-y ) that will hopefully address this issue: Activity as Discussions – though i’ve been a bit slow on my end to wrap it up.
rich! @ etiviti and @r-a-y,
Thank you both so much for responding to this question as it it an important one for me to resolve.
For us… I’m not as code savvy as I would like to be. If I edit the entry.php theme file, is there a place in there that will then duplicate the activity stream entry (or Group Stream Entry) back into the forum? At this point I don’t wnat to turn off the stream commenting -if possible… I like how it glues it all together. Here is the thought flow that I would like to have happen:
1. Somebody enters a Forum Topic (not Group Activity Comment) –>
2. Someone else replies to the Topic via the Activity Stream or Group Stream (Not in the Forum itself) –>
3. The reply from #2 (the reply was left via the Activity Stream or Group Stream NOT in the FORUM) should appear in the Forum itself under the original Forum Topic Post.
4. This process should not affect somebody replying to post in the Forum itselfy, that should work as it does.If somebody would show me a mod for that I would be ecstatic…
Looking forward to the new plugin. I’ve applied your theme tweaks using the “extras” plugin but I don’t get a “view activity replies” link.
