make only part of the date required

I’m setting up a home school group. For privacy issues the parents don’t want the childrens’ full birthdays to be required. They want just month and year. How ever for the parents themselves they don’t want to give away their ages so they want only month and day. I have to have the childrens’ ages required so they get put in the correct grade groups, but is there any way to make the day of the month not required or better yet, not even show up?

Hi @redknite

Assuming the date is an xProfile field, you could remove that and insert 2 option lists? For example

Option list 1: Month

1
2
3
4
5
…
12

Option list 2: Year

1990
1991
1992
..
2014

In your case, there’d be no need for a 3rd option list (day of the month) but you could always add that in at a later date?

I’m sure there is a more civilised way of approaching this but that idea came into my head so I thought I’d share.

This does seem like a reasonable idea. The problem with it is that I have a user base already established and this would mean i would have to translate data into the new fields. I’ll definitely keep this in mind as a last resort though. Thank you for the input.

Does anyone else have an idea?
