Make username sign up more than lowercase

I’m using a plugin. Twit connect that connects twitter login with wordpress. Problem is is creates a duplicate user in BP. I think it has to do with the username being different.
I searched on wp mu and here no result. Is there a way to allow bp sign up username to be more than just the lowercase letters?
