Mark Message as Read not working?

it doesn’t seem that “mark as read” is working. I’m seeing this in both testpb.org as well as using the bp-default theme. It marks the message and changes the indication to read, but if you refresh the page the message returns to unread status.
Is this something that was recently fixed? A couple of days ago, this didn’t seem to be working on testpb.org but checking it this morning it seems to work.
wondering if this is or was a known issue before I report a bug.
