Member’s profile slug to use field other than user_name

Due to our set-up, the user name is the members email address. This is causing a major issue as our whole list is basically exposed. Since our site is pretty private, it isn’t important for users to view each others profile.
1) Is there a way to turn off or filter out all of the links that point to the members profile or…
2) Is there a way to change what field is used for the members url?
