WP/BP versions? It looks more like a plugin or BP theme which needs to be updated. First, change to bp-default theme and see if behavior is corrected. If that doesn’t work, try deactivating plugins to isolate whether the issue is with BuddyPress, BP configurations in dashboard or your with third-party add-ons.
Wordpress 3.3 and Buddypress 1.5…. I’ve disabled all except buddypress locally and it’s still happening…
Did this issue happen only recently or has it always been like this since you first installed BuddyPress? What theme and plugins were you using when this first happened? I would at this point re-run Settings > Permalinks to year/month and Save Changes to “jog” the install.
Its happened for as long as I can remember…. We’ve just been fighting other fires until now and finally got a chance to look at it…. I changed the the permalinks to a couple of different options and then set back and no go…

Hello. Are you able to tell me how I can set up the site so mentions appear like on facebook? Eg. after one types @ and begins typing someone’s name a dropdown appears to make it easy to find the person they wish to mention? Also – I’d like to set notification emails up so when someone is mentioned they know to log into the site. Thanks!
iTaNGO, you might check https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-group-email-subscription/ for the notifications and https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-labs/ for the autosuggest (I’ve not used the labs yet).
Also you might want to start a new topic next time (you sorta hijacked mine) 8^)
