Menu look – colors, borders

Hi,
I am new here and would like to ask how to customise the look of some elements, in this case it is about menu and submenu items – to make them more readable for users/members.
Cutrently they display in 2 rows, no borders, grey color for active menu group and in the row below for selected option etc…
We would love to have something with separating lines, thin border for each menu position – like tabbed interface should look like… 🙂
I believe there are some classes that should be customized but where to look for it, please?
