Missing users and redirection issue on user profiles

    @project_subdomain

    wp 4.1.1
    theme twenty twelve
    bbpress 2.5.6
    buddypress 2.2.1

    (offline testsite,
    child themes in use)

    Hi,
I ‘ve installed buddypress after having buildt a forum with bbpress because I simply wanted to enable user communication via private messages. Ideally the bbpress forum should stay originally and buddypress generates a messaging system for users by adding a link to their profile only (maybe also to related posts/replies).

Now I can’t open a user’s profile anymore (“redirection issue – cannot stop process”), also old bbpress users cannot be found on the “members”-page added by buddypress.

Any ideas on how to fix that and get the message system working?
    Many thanks!

you’ll have to check your settings conciensiously.
First, deactivate bbpress and BuddyPress. Launch WP alone, just in case of.

Activate BuddyPress and review the settings. Each activated component should have his own page, without any content. Activate permalinks and use any option except “default”.
Sync BP and WP users in BP settings.

As BP component you need at least Messages and i recommend you Extended Profiles for better UX.

Now go to dashboard > tools and repair BP. Back to front and see how BP works. Test messaging.

Activate bbPress and read here before starting to set it up.

After bbP settings, return to dashboard > Tools and repair the Forum

Cross finger that the sky doesn’t fall over your head. Buddy, you’re done ! 😉

    Thanks for your reply, danbp!

I’m now through all of your steps and doublechecked all settings again and again. Finally I made a new installation from buddypress and repeated the steps one more time.

I haven’t activated bbpress yet as buddypress alone does’nt work already. Exact same issue as described above occurs: Can’t load any of the user profile pages (neither old members before nor newly added users after buddypress installation) while everything else is working.

Which is the config you use locally ?
How is the profile page url formed ?
Is your member directory containing a members list ?
Have you enabled debug in wp-config ? See if you get warnings or notifications.

The url which is not loading, also tested online on a protected testsite:
    domain.com/members/username

Yes, the member diretory contains a members list (all wordpress users).

I’ve enabled debug in wp-config. There are no warnings or notifications.

Sorry, I recently noticed that the other member-related buddypress pages “activate” and “register” also don’t work properly. So it looks to me as the home’s content loads only with that same home-url (domain.com). Also, since syncing WordPress profiles now all members can be found in the list on the members page – other than stated in the topic’s title and first post.

Three other things I thought about:
    1. My directory structure is as follows: (root)/folder/
folder then contains index.php and main wordpress-folder. Didn’t want multisite and tried to manage more sites that way.
    2. I have added a new default user role before having installed buddypress. Originally working and added in my child theme’s functions.php.
    3. Theme incompability? Theme twenty twelve had been modified very slightly. Seems unlikely to me.

Point 1 is probably your issue.

BuddyPress does not work on installations where you give WordPress its own directory.

To resume a default BP install.

your-site.com is the root. Generally a folder called htdocs or www. Once WP is installed you have something like this:

    serveur/path/www/wp-admin
    server/path/www/wp-content
    server/path/www/wp-includes

    BuddyPress goes to /server/path/www/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/

This will not work if you use BP /server/path/www/mysite/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/

Oh no, feared that. Too bad. Unfortunately it seems the best for me to fall back on one of the plugins enabling private messaging between wordpress users due to serious issues after moving folders last times.

Thanks so much for your effort, danbp!

Is this going to be changed in future versions?
