Yes you can tweak the default sign up to do that. Also, consider using something like this to redirect logged-out users away from content you want accessible to logged-in members only.

function custom_redirect() {
    if ( ! is_user_logged_in() ) {
        // redirect
        wp_redirect( home_url() );
        exit;
    }
}
add_action( 'template_redirect', 'custom_redirect' );

That is a massively good point @shanebp – could you even go up one level again and use init?
