Just a shot in the dark, but is this sort of thing possible? Does a plugin exist already?

On my site, the child blogs are shops owned by individuals, and one of my users asked if there was a way for people to “mention” her shop (by subdirectory folder name) like they “mention” a user, and have the system notify her of that shop mention. I think this would be pretty neat, but I’m not sure how uber complicated it would be to do.
