Mystery Sidebar Created

  • Hi, I’ve installed Buddypress with bbPress in a new WP installation, using PlatformPro as my theme. After considerable tweaking, I’ve been able to get it ALMOST looking as I want it. But, when I go to the forums page, I have a mystery sidebar showing up that doesn’t appear anywhere in my theme setup. It’s empty, however, no matter what I do, the div containing it remains in place. Even in Buddypress’ other pages, there is no instance of this happening.

I notice that Buddypress/bbPress seem to take absolute control over CSS and even with the options to let the site’s CSS control it, they insist on dominating the design. I can’t for example, change the font sizes or style things that should appear as labels (now showing as bullet points). Everything works great on the Buddypress Theme, BUT, the whole idea of having an option to let the site owner’s theme control CSS is just that.

Check it out. http://www.epicurus.com/discussion and http://www.epicurus.com/discussion/forums

HELP! I need to launch this by the 1st of October.

  • I fixed it.

You have a bug. Buddypress uses the word “forums” but so does bbPress. You get a conflict in the bbPress settings (something no-one would ever notice). I changed the name and saved and voila! No more sidebar.

I disagree. You noticed it, right? bbPress even displays a warning that it may conflict with BuddyPress.

That aside, it’s the first version of BuddyPress that works with bbPress 2.0, which itself is a brand new plugin. Integration will only get smoother in the future.

Correction. Buddypress uses a slug of “forums” and bbPress defaults to an Archive Slug of “forums” causing a potential conflict between the two. Oddly, the conflict manifests itself in a mystery sidebar being created. An incredibly strange event, to say the least.
