n00b confused as $%#*

I’m trying to find my way around buddypress and how it organizes content, forums, groups, members and it is confusing mostly because of the fragmented structure

another confusing thing is this, shouldn’t the ‘Your Activity’ button (top left beside ‘Site Activity’) show me a list of my activity on this site so far?
    http://buddypress.org/community/members/synaptic/activity/

    Instead it shows:

“Sorry, there was no activity found. Please try a different filter.”

This even though I’ve participated in several forum/group discussions.

Go to your profile page https://buddypress.org/community/members/synaptic/profile/edit/group/1/ and make “Name (required)” different from your username. One way to prevent spammers’ posts from appearing in activity streams.

um, what? I think your response was intended for someone else. I don’t understand how it applies to my questions.

That could happen as I have many tabs/browsers open at the same time :-) But in this case, my response was to your query, “shouldn’t the ‘Your Activity’ button (top left beside ‘Site Activity’) show me a list of my activity on this site so far?”. .

on this site they have it set to block spam, change the name in the profile field to something different than login name

ok, now I understand, this is a measure in place to prevent spam, thanks @modemlooper and @mercime appreciate the help

I’m not entirely clear why the 3 things are linked together:

1)stopping spammers’ posts from appearing in activity streams
    2)username and name variables
3)activity stream not shown in a person’s profile page (https://buddypress.org/community/members/USER-NAME/activity/

If the key issue is stopping spammers from polluting activity streams (1) why not do that? why involve (2) and (3)?

is it just how buddypress is coded that makes it a necessity that if we want to implement 1, then 2 and 3 must also happen?

The activity stream here is really non essential as its a support forum ;)

    Have to disagree with that.

The stream is an easy way to look at prior posts – especially helpful because the search doesn’t work.
I have an activity stream on my profile – but it’s always at least 2 months behind and never comprehensive.

So having neither a useable stream or search means people using this site… well you know how they feel.

Well it is sorta broken and should be turned off in favor of a profile tab that shows your topics started as well as topics involved in. I bet JJJ will flip this to bbPress eventually. #FingersCrossed
