Navigation FIlter?

Is there a way to add a filter to bp_nav_items that would change the name(s) of the default Nav buttons?
Ex.
Blog = News
Member = Fans?
Etc?
So it would show up as
Home | News | Fans | Groups etc…
I know this can be done in the header.php file but I’d rather not touch those files.
