New WP-BP Install, /Forums Refuses To Work

  • @deejaywoody

    1. Which version of WP/MU are you running? 2.92

    2. Did you install WP/MU as a directory or subdomain install? No

    3. If a directory install, is it in root or in a subdirectory? /httpdocs

    4. Did you upgraded from a previous version of WP/MU? If so, from which version? No

    5. Was WP/MU functioning properly before installing/upgrading BuddyPress (BP)? e.g. permalinks, creating a new post, commenting. Yes

    6. Which version of BP are you running? 1.2.1

    7. Did you upgraded from a previous version of BP? If so, from which version? No Upgrade

    8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated? No

    9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes? Yes

    10. Have you modified the core files in any way? No

    11. Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php? No

    12. If running bbPress, which version? Or did your BuddyPress install come with a copy of bbPress built-in? Built-in

    13. Please provide a list of any errors in your server’s log files.

    14. Which company provides your hosting? Cloud Dedicated Linux @ 1and1.com

As the subject states: Fresh install of WP 2.92 and BP 1.2.1 on my Dedicated Cloud Linux server at 1and1.com. It is running CentOS 5, MySQL and PHP5. Everything, I repeat, everything works perfectly with this install except anything referencing /Forums. I create a new group, works fine! I try to associate a new forum with the group, fail!

Many other installations of WordPress (just WP, no Buddypress) are working just fine from this server, so it is certainly something specific to the Buddypress add-in. Please take a look and let me know what you think. I’ve done everything short of modifying php.ini, etc..

    Thanks!

Hm, this is a fairly obviously question, so just to get it out of the way — have you gone into your /wp-admin/ -> “Forums Setup” under the BuddyPress menu, and selected the “Set up a new bbPress installation” button?

    Did you setup forums properly?

Login to the WP backend, navigate to “BuddyPress > Forums setup”, what does it say?

    [EDIT]

Looks like my moderating buddy already answered your Q ;)

Beat you by about 7 seconds there, r-a-y. Getting slow in your old age ;)

Thanks for the quick attention. Yes, the Forums setup completes, stating that it was able to take all the necessary actions, etc. I can run through the repair and it claims to have fixed it as well. If I go into a group and attempt to ‘enable’ forums, it will bomb just as it does when you attempt to hit /forums from the browser. Thoughts?

How exactly does it “Fail”? There must be an error message on screen or in your web server’s log.

It goes straight to a 404. Just a moment…, I’ll pull up the logs

Interesting… I’m getting no additional entries in access nor error logs when the 404 occurs. Where else do you suggest I look?

IMHO WPMU, BuddyPress and bbPress works well if:

    – You set a wildcard domain (in my test site subdirectory based instalation doesn’t work)

    – BbPress table is in the same database as BuddyPress, WPMU and i. ..

    – BbPress has the same prefix as WPMU. For example, if you use a standard prefix to the WordPress table (for example wp_) then for bbPress give wp_bb_

While WPMU is optional, would you recommend using it as opposed to “plain jane” WP? Since the BP/bbPress installation is bundled, do I really have the option of changing it’s database/prefix options?

    FYI –

I’ve run into the same identical situation.

I’m with WP2.9.2 (latest) and BuddyPress Version 1.2.2.1 (latest)

WordPress Install is a fresh install

I’m on a linux VPS with HostGator.

I have no plugins installed, other than BuddyPress

I’m using BuddyPress Default 1.2.2.1 theme.

As far as I can tell, all links are working, except 2.

One is http://www.gjzone.com/forums –> returns a 404 and there is nothing in the logs that indicates a problem

Two, if I create a group, and place a check in the box for including in forum discussion, I get a 404

I don’t see anything in the logs (which seem to be limited in scope anyhow)

My htaccess is 644, and seems to have standard WP stuff

the bp-config.php file gets written and looks ok (no garbled input, etc)

    I have forums enabled

    I’ve deactived/re-activated buddypress plugin

    I’ve disabled/enabled forums

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

    One quick note –

I noticed that there doesn’t seem to be any bbpress related tables in the database…. there are bp_ and wp_ but I thought that bbpress would be bb_

If the tables are missing, what’s a guy to do? (I thought that the install was too quick!)

    SOLVED!

After reading a different post about bbpress tables not installing, it turns out to be a memory issue.

I upped my memory limit in php.ini and all installed perfectly.

    Hope this helps someone else.

I am having a similar issue.

    Wpmu 2.9.2, Bp 1.2.2.1

When I click on forums, then post a new topic, enter in everything. It goes back to the screen showing All topics (0) – and says “sorry there were no topics found”

I checked on the buddypress / forums setup tab in the backend, and it says:

bbPress forum integration in BuddyPress has been set up correctly. If you are having problems you can re-install

Should I try to reinstall the forums / bbpress? and if so which option would I choose?

Set up a new bbPress installation Use an existing bbPress installation

An update to my situation in the post above..

I deactivated buddypress. Deleted all files in the buddypress foldder. Uploaded fresh 1.2.2.1 buddypress files. Reactivated buddypress. Then my forums tab disappeared from the public home page. So I went into the dashboard, clicked don forums setup, and it said I could install, etc… So I clicked to install a fresh bbpress.

It said it could not write a bb-config file and gave me the code to create one manaully.

I copied the code and put it in the root of my wordpressmu install as it said.

Forums tab now shows. I went to add a forum post, and the same thing happens – it just disappears.. like it is not saving any forum posts…

    Any ideas?

Resolved after reading this thread: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/new-install-of-bp-press-cant-post-any-topics-in-forum

I decided to login as a group admin, click on the admin for the group, and checked the box to enable forum posting. Now I have a publicly viewable forum post – so it seems to work… I guess this is resolved.

Although I must suggest adding a note somewhere around the forums posting area that posting a message to a forum that does not have it enabled will do no good… as I and many others are left confused about why we make a forum post and it just disappears.. I guess a note saying that that feature needs to be enabled by the group admin would be nice.

Or perhaps we should be able to enable general forums for users without groups membership being needed, maybe?

Hello, I just upgraded my Buddypress. Now I am having problems creating groups and cannot create forums. When I delete the group to start over, it still says I have groups, but does not list them in the groups directory. My problem creating groups happens at this link http://fashionsblogs.com/groups/create/step/group-avatar/ when you click next is when an error occurs

@tazatek Had the tables actually been created? What parameters did you use pertaining to memory in php.ini?
