Notifications Behaviour

I have some concerns from an end users point of view regarding notifications. I’m not sure I see the logic in how they’ve been put together.

I’ve only just realised in terms of notifications that this – “A member replies to an update or comment you’ve posted” is only true if the commenting member uses your @handle. If they don’t the OP will never be notified of a user replying to their update. So the very function that exists to begin a conversation falls down straight away.

Things get more confusing (from a user’s point of view) when you do use the @handle in a reply. When the OP accepts the notification, they’re taken to the ‘Mentions’ filter which shows the reply, but not the original update it was made against. How much confusion is the going to cause for end users?

Maybe I’m not understanding this. It seems to me the second problem can be resolved by fixing the first one?…Add notifications for update replies.

    Hi,

you’ve already asked for this in the past !

    https://codex.buddypress.org/member-guide/notifications/

By default, each member can activate/deactivate notification (under Your Profile > settings > email)
    Reference: bp-activity/bp-activity-screens.php

    Or see this plugin.

I understand how notifications work. I just feel they’re quite seriously flawed – which is where that plugin might be useful.

IMO email notifications will not be of interest to most users. At least not those on tablets or mobiles. I’m trying to look at it purely from a users perspective, and the default notification setup is not friendly.

    I’ll try the plugin.

    Thanks.

    Hi @style960

How do you suggest notifications be improved? If you think they are seriously flawed, then you could open a Trac ticket with your observations.

    Hi @henrywright

I opened a Trac ticket to suggest Live Notifications some time ago:
    https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/5976

The theme I’m beta testing has these included.

This other ticket covers what I believe needs fixing with how notifications are generated:

Ticket 6057 looks as though it’s being actively investigated. My advice is to give the core team time to develop a patch and then perhaps help test once something becomes available.

    Yeah, happy to do that.
