“Official” BuddyPress Child Themes Broken?

  • jennylynneh

I am extremely new. Started checking out what BuddyPress was yesterday. I’ve been looking at the listing of “official” BuddyPress themes shown on this site, though I realize they are hosted offsite. When I attempt to preview many of them at the hosted site, some of them come up as blank screens, while others appear almost as pre-css html websites. Almost none of them resemble their preview image. I have even tried to download a couple — BP Colors for example, but when I installed it, I simply got the same BuddyPress theme without change.

I have a fresh, clean install. The only pluggin I have installed is BuddyPress 1.5.1. My WordPress version is WP is 3.2.1.

I’ve also noted that more than 1/2 of the over 107 plugins mentioned to be available appear to be incompatible with the current version of WP.

What is the ETA to resolve these sorts of issues?

  • theme previews don’t work for BuddyPress themes, because doesn’t have BuddyPress installed. I think there’s very little chance of this situation changing. I’ll contact the company who runs (Automattic) and pass the feedback on.

Regarding plugins appearing out of date; the BuddyPress core team has no involvement or responsibility for the vast majority of those plugins. If someone decides to stop contributing to a plugin, then it will eventually break and stop working, unless someone contacts the original author and they agree to take ownership of it.
It’s also worth noting some plugins may work fine with the current version of BuddyPress, and the author just hasn’t bothered with a release to update the “tested up to” version number.

A lot of the repo themes are outdated. It’s ridiculous that they screen themes heavily when they are submitted to the repo but are then forgotten and never tested on newer versions of wp or bp. The theme review system at is completely flawed.
