Only show post in user activity stream depending on interest

Does anybody know if it;s possible for the following feature ?
-User registers
-User chooses which categories they are interested in
-User is sent a notification when post with selected categories are created or there is a “1” in the little red circle?is this possible in BuddyPress or do I need to look elsewhere
