Permalink Problems with Custom Taxonomies

My site currently has several different post types each with unique taxonomies. Each of these taxonomies has a default value which it falls back to if no specific category was chosen.
Unfortunately, buddy press is having trouble with this in the activity feed.
If I post an article without a category functions on the site give it the defaulted category. http://www.website.com/news/defaultcategory/im-writing-a-second-news-article-324/
Unfortunately, the link in the activity feed is showing up like this:
http://www.website.com/news/%news_category%/im-writing-a-second-news-article-324/Instead of using the category that the program defaulted to, it’s using the % name from the permalink structure. Can anyone help me avoid this? Maybe there’s a workaround?
