I was tired of hacking the core to make this work (and rehacking each time I upgraded ) so I wrote a plugin for it: http://dev.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2009/09/07/new-buddypress-plugin-enhanced-buddypress-widgets/. It adds new Groups and Members widgets that are basically duplicates of the core Groups and Members widgets, with the added feature that you can choose whether you want them to display Active, Newest, or Popular on page load.
It definitely gives a nice little added polish to the widgets.
If you’re familiar with Trac, SVN, and the WordPress Coding Standards, you could give a go at creating a patch to have stuff like this implemented into the core for you, to your credit of course.
If you’re not familiar with the above but would still like to see these changes make it into the core, send me a PM and I’ll put together a patch for you using your plugin.
