Poor handling of username’s with spaces

    @brx8r

    Hi I’m just getting started with BP. My admin account has a space in it so I’m seeing some issues.

    Just on this one screenshot my name is written three different ways: “The Keeper”, “the-keeper”, and “The”.

    I realise the last one is probably a bug, but ideally I would like to do away with “@the-keeper” as well. I’ve definitely worked with websites before where you could “@Firstname Lastname” and it would work.

    Let me know what the situation is because I would be willing to work on this myself to improve the feature for you. Cheers.

    I’ve just discovered https://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress-usernames-only/
    with the compatibility mode constant
    solves the issues!

    @brx8r Yep. 🙂

    The last one isn’t a bug. Let me try to explain.

    * “The Keeper” is your BuddyPress name.
    * “the-keeper” is the version of your name used in URLs and for at-messages.

    If your BuddyPress name looks like “firstname lastname”, BuddyPress will, by default, split that on the space into “firstname” and “lastname”, and sets those as your First Name and Last Name in the WordPress user profile (in wp-admin -> Users -> Edit).

    The “What’s new” box is pretty old at this point and it must have been built to specifically fetch the “First Name”. Thus the “The” 😀

    That makes sense, thanks @djpaul.
