Pre-registration of accounts from external source.

Would it be possible to create users programmatically from an external source, and sending a session link to a user that allows them to log in and “claim” their account and fill in an email address and password?
The problem is the external source allows users to change their username, and only ties an identity to an UUID, would this cause an issue with buddypress or would it be possible to use the external sources username as a displayname and allow users to create a username at the same time as filling in their email address and password?
