Problem linking to secure content

Hello,
I have a BuddyPress installation which is mostly working fine.
However, if you follow a link to a page which you need to login to see, the user is taken to a 404 – Page Not Found message.
I need the user to be redirected to the login page. Once logged in, they should then be redirected to the page they originally requested.
Could anyone help me achieve this, please? I’m a little unsure as to why this isn’t the default behaviour?
