Problems setting up Buddypress

  • @maichomper

    Member

    Hello everybody,

I am new to the both WordPress and Buddypress. I just installed WP today and it is working fine however after manually installing BP, when I tried to activate it the following error was displayed:

“Error 500 – Internal server error

An internal server error has occurred!
    Please try again later.”

My hosting company is 1and1. I know this error comes from the server but I tried to search for it on google and I couldn’t find any useful info to solve it. Any ideas? All comments are highly appreciated.

Does the problem go away when you disable BuddyPress?

Error 500 is a pretty vague error.

Disable BuddyPress and re-upload the /buddypress/ folder again. Make sure you uploaded all the BuddyPress files, then reactivate it and see what happens. Also make sure your .htaccess file isn’t corrupted.

    Hello r-a-y,

I tried removing all the files and uploading them again. The error is shown after I click activate. Nothing happens after that. I haven’t changed anything on a .htaccess file, is there something I need to change? Thanks for your help

@Maichomper – “I just installed WP today and it is working fine”
How did you install WP, via script like Fantastico/Simplescript or via manual upload (FTP or cPanel)? If you installed via script, start from scratch — drop DB tables and delete wp-config.php and .htaccess file in server — download fresh WP https://wordpress.org/download/and upload WP files manually

@chipy you should start a new topic instead. In the meantime, click on the link to update permalinks. If that doesn’t work, go to menu Settings > Permalinks and choose permalink to other than default permalink and save. Mod_rewrite must be enabled in your server.

    **UPDATE**
@mercime – I installed WP manually. Thanks for the suggestions.

I was able to activate BP by modifying the .htaccess file however now I cannot access my blog because I get (you guessed right) the SAME error!!!

    “Error 500 – Internal server error…”

It happened right after I clicked the BP tab for the first time. Please help me I’ve been trying to set this up for the last 3 days.

@Maichomper as r-a-y mentioned above, there’s just so many things which could trip up a 500 internal server error. Do you have access to your error log, and what does it say?

== I was able to activate BP by modifying the .htaccess file ==
Actually you shouldn’t have needed to revise anything in htaccess file to make BP work. Do post content of your .htaccess file and indicate what your modifications were.
Are you on Windows server? Where are you hosted?
