Problems with switching domain – how to get old db in fresh install?

I have a Buddypress installation that I started a year ago or so in WP-mu. Now I want to move it to a new domain and a new server and am trying to get the installation moved. However, this does not go very well. Furthermore I have some other issues as well with my installation (e.g. members cannot post by clicking the top bar as they do not get a pop-down menu). I am a bit tired of this all and feel the best way is to make a fresh start with a new WP 3.01 installation. However, when I tried to install a new wp with my old database this went horribly wrong. Is it possible to import all data from an existing wp buddy database in a fresh new installation and if so, how do I do it? Thanks!
