They are already adding profile fields with select2 js support, mentioned in the features as well.

I already use this plugin and a few others from your great team, but the problem is that I have a field with a lot of checkboxes (more than 30). I wanted to change this long column to the select2 field. But I did not find that in the plugin.
In addition, I use a nice plugin “BP Profile Search” It allows you to selectively search by checkboxes.
That’s why I wanted to change checkboxes to the select2 field. So, I already have some decision. But I hope my idea will be realized in next releases of buddypress or bp-xprofile-custom-field-types.

Ok, have you tried creating a new select field with all your options ? and then see if it is working for you or not. If yes, then you can remove old checkboxes and can keep the select box only.
If you have existing data then that might be little bit tricky but you can give it a try on staging site.

It should be a select box.
