Question about BuddyPress functionality – online directory

I am working on my church’s website and they would like to have an online directory and BuddyPress. All of the church members would be listed in the online directory, but not all of them would use BuddyPress. For example there are about 1000 members, but probably only 200 would join BuddyPress. Is there a way to have the online directory and BuddyPress linked together?
If I first imported the church directory info into WordPress, what would happen as members started using BuddyPress? Is there a way to have the accounts connected?
