Question About “Compose” Messge Feature On Profile Page For Users

Greetings everyone.
I’m new to the BP community. I’ve joined a development team and have been asked to make a few modifications to user options on a site. One issue I’ve run into is that on the user profile page, when they attempt to compose a message to a friend, a drop down box appears as they begin typing in the person’s name. However, it doesn’t appear to work on this site. Instead, a white box appears and it looks to have some table rows, but the rows of info are empty.
Is this where user avatars and/or names are suppose to appear? If so, can someone lead me in the direction to fix it?
I’m using WP 3.1.3 and BP 1.2.8. Thanks in advance.
