Question regarding Transfer from Ning

Attached to the online magazine I run is a social network/citzen journalism site. I’ve been using a service called Ning to run it, but Ning became a paid service a few months ago and it’s costing too much money to continue using it.
I want to switch over to using an open source program like buddypress. The idea would be to install it on my company’s server, and then transfer over as much of the existing content in bobalicious as possible, using the export/import functions. Is this easily possible? I’m new to this and don’t really know where to start. Any help is appreciated.
