Registration and Usernames

I think this is a frequently asked question, but I’d like to clarify it before I put a site live. When a perform a test registration, the default fields are Username, Email Address, Password (twice to confirm) and Name.

However, after testing a few times, the field actually used to login isn’t ‘Username’ but ‘Name’. Surely this will instantly cause confusion? It seems counter-intuitive.

Name is also the field to which the @ handle is appended.

Which brings me to the question – what is the username for if it can’t be used to login?

I’d like to bring users familiarity to other social networks or terms they may know from the workplace. Username should, in that case, be used to login?

If not, I’d like to remove it to avoid any confusion.

    Thanks,
    Paul.
