Reinstall BuddyPress without 404 errors?

    Hey all,

    I was thinking of reinstalling BuddyPress at Unlimited Fan Fiction, but I want to do so without reinstalling the whole site as I have quite a few users (unless I can back them up safely and then restore them). Last time I tried that, I got 404s for all BuddyPress components. It’s currently running 4.0 of WordPress, and I will be installing the latest version of BuddyPress.

    Thanks for the help,
    Nathan Pinno

    You should always backup your database before introducing any plugin. BuddyPress has never caused me any 404’s unless you have forgotten to associate the BuddyPress pages correctly please review: https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/configure-components/

    Apparently you didn’t understand my post correctly. I said I was planning on reinstalling BuddyPress, not installing it. Your help is not useful, because you didn’t understand my post correctly.

    Actually it’s more yourself not understanding @bphelp post, I read the response to explain about backing up prior to installing a plugin not to mean that you were ‘installing’ but general advise that would ensure a safe restore point, regardless of whether it was the right advice please be clear that when people do attempt to offer help & advice it’s common practise to thank them not admonish them 😉

    As your OP stands I too don’t really understand why you are ‘reinstalling’ BP, do you actually mean reinstalling or reactivating?

    Your comments about 404’s which is all we can read as being your issue is in reference to an event you experienced having reinstalled your whole WP installation! Why would you do that?

    The problem with your post at the moment is that you need to clarify why you are doing these things what is the actual root issue not the issue when you proceed with a process that seems unnecessary.

    However do read the links above regarding permalinks as those are vital to the correct operation of BP as are the BP empty placeholder pages for components.

    @hnla:

    I’m completely reinstalling BuddyPress (I had installed and working before, but I deleted it cause I thought it wasn’t working smoothly with another plugin I installed after it.) – like I said I want to avoid reinstalling WordPress if I can because of the number of users (about 50, but they are all fellow fan fiction writers and.or readers like myself).

    When I tried it myself, I made sure I correctly created and associated the various pages with the BuddyPress components that needed them. I then went to check out my profile and got a 404, after getting a few more of those, I went and removed it again.
