[Resolved} 404 error on buddypress profiles, forum topics

    Hi,

Wordpress 3.3.1 updated from current last version
Buddypress 1.5.3.1 upgraded from the current last version
    Host: Dreamhost
    Server: Apache
    Rewrite module is ON
Theme I’m Using: Mingle – a buddypress ready theme.

I have already gone over everything 404 related on here with no luck at getting help or a fix. I have already spoke to dreamhost and had them check everything on my site. They are telling me this issue is with wordpress/buddypress. I just found out about this issue from a site member a couple days ago. THis is on my live site.

If I can’t get help to get this resolved today, I am deleting buddypress. I doubt anyone here is really worried about my one site running your plugin due to all of the people that do use buddypress, I just don’t have the time to continuously hit forums all day, and get little to no response.

    Some help would be nice.

@FuriousCigars “I doubt anyone here is really worried about my one site” I’m worried. Not about you deactivating buddypress, that’s your problem… but i am worried about your site :)

Firstly, have you read through the codex? https://codex.buddypress.org/troubleshooting/navigation-links-return-404-errors/

Secondly, are you running any other WordPress plugins? Their usually the common cause of 404 errors (in my experience). If you can, deactivate them all (except for buddypress) and see if the problem gets resolved. if it is resolved start reactivating them all one by one to find the culprit.

I’m not sure if this will help but today I started getting all 404 errors except on my home page. The blog posts, member pages, forum pages, etc all 404 errors. First I deactivated all my plugins and then checked that, still 404 errors so I reactivated them.

Then I changed the permalink structure I had set back to default. This fixed it. I then switched the permalink structure back again to my preference and what all my exiting links are (previous setting) and it is now working fine.

I don’t know why this happen but maybe doing that will help you as well. Good luck

@chris I have already deactivated plugins, used default theme, and gone through countless posts on here trying fixes, including the permalink saving.

Also referring to your comment on my quote, …thats your problem……that’s precisely the garbage I’ve been seeing here that makes want to get rid of buddypress….I mean did you really need to quote my frustration. Thanks for the very helpful attitude.

    @guap
yes I have tried those things…thanks for trying to help

@FuriousCigars – My apologies, i didn’t realize that me taking 10 minutes out of my time to try and help meant i couldn’t make a laugh out of a silly comment you made…

I am a buddypress user just like you. I post here and try and help others who are having trouble because i’d expect them to do the same for me. I didn’t need to attempt to help you and thus i dont appreciate you claiming that i post garbage. Thank You. It’s people with attitudes like yours that cause others not to help around here.

Have a good night. Hope you figure it out.

@Chris If I could figure this out, I wouldn’t be here. I don’t have the skills to work this out on my own.

I did not make a “silly” comment, and you saying “not my problem” is hardly helpful, and only proves that my comment was not silly, but true. I don’t mean to give you attitude, you haven’t done anything to me. It just gets really frustrating when everyone asks you the same questions over and over again. I realize that you don’t know that I have been asked to deactivate plugins countless times, and for that I’m sorry.

I would just say if your going to take your time to try to help someone, having a laugh about their comments is the wrong way to start off.

Thanks for trying, and have a good night yourself.

@FuriousCigars – Sorry, i end up making fun of comments when i get offended (i have anger-management issues and it’s my way of keeping it under control).Making a (well, what i thought sounded like a) smart alec comment about nobody caring because they didn’t immediately repy to previous postings of yours is offensive. We are ALL (except for one or two of the core developers who are hired by Automattic to ensure the project runs smoothly) volunteers here, I spend countless hours each day (and i know alot of others do too) voluntarily attempting to help people when i can. and when someone says i don’t care, it’s offensive. I’m sorry, like i said it’s my way of keeping my anger-management issues under control.

Anyways. Back to the topic: 404 errors. So that i’m not repeating what you have already tried… do you mind listing everything you have tried? it’s really difficult NOT repeating things when you dont know what has already been said…. or what the problem is.

    I’ve done:

    permalink resave
    uninstall and reinstall
    deactivated plugins
    used buddypress theme
    optimized db
    dropped unneeded tables
verified rewrite module – verified Options FollowSymLinks and AllowOveride All

I can’t remember the other things from a few other forum topics, I’m brain damaged by this lol.

Sorry we got off on the wrong foot, I really do appreciate the help. I would gladly give you admin login if taking a inside look would help.

Putting forums aside, do only member pages not work? Does everything else work? e.g. WordPress post permalinks, WordPress pages, BuddyPress groups.

@FuriousCigars – Try moving the Members and groups pages into its own root page rather than as a child of activities… the activity directory hogs the url structure…

@Chris Thats exactly what it was man. I had the those pages under Activity as their parent. As soon as I changed that everything works perfectly. It amazes me that my brain couldn’t have thought of that. I am very sorry I took my frustration out on you bro. I feel like a real jerk today.

Thank you very much for the help, that fixed it all.

@FuriousCigars Sometimes the simplest things get overlooked. :)
As an alternative option: If you really want the pages to be as a child, creating a new page with the slug /community/ and putting them as a child of that page should work (it works here at bp.org).

Don’t sweat it. It’s understandable. i get frustrated alot too. Just remember that their are people here willing to help (sometimes, you just need to bump your topic afew times, because sometimes we miss topics when we sleep, and when it was posted early on in the night and hasn’t been bumped recently, we assume the issue’s been resolved.)
