[resolved] Fatal error in the admin area after 1.6 update

    Hi guys,
I’ve just updated to 1.6 and everything was fine until I ran the update wizard. I’m now locked out of the admin area with 500 errors. Nothing in my apache log but my PHP log says this:

`07-Aug-2012 09:03:40] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 30720 bytes) in /Users/laurienicholas/Desktop/SCCI Remodel/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/_inc/ajax.php on line 560`

Any help in starting to solve this would be great.

    Many thanks in advance.

I also get the same problem, I can still access the main site but not the wordpress admin and I get a similar PHP error as well

Seems to be a memory leak or garbage collection failure somewhere. The line 560 in ajax.php is seemingly just be the straw that tips the camels back rather than the source of the issue.

Just as as sanity check have you both looked at this thread: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/transitioning-from-1-5-x-to-1-6/. I know it may not be relevant but trying to throw something into the mix that may help.

Assuming you’ve upgraded all themes / plugins to 1.6 versions also then I think what is needed here would be information on your setup.

For instance: what did you upgrade from? What theme / plugins are you using? Anything else in your error logs? You can use something like https://gist.github.com/ to paste then link to your error logs.

    Hi Karmatosed,
Thanks for getting back to us so quickly.

After a little poking around with my setup it seems the error lies with a plugin I’m using called S2Member. Will post something in their forums and report back with their response.

    Thanks.

*** EDIT: THIS POST IS INCORRECT – THE PROBLEM DOES APPEAR TO LIE WITH S2Member **

Ok this appears to actually be much further reaching than S2Member.

S2Member does most definitely produce this error when activated at the same time as BP 1.6 but so do the plugins ContactForm7 and AdRotate so I think the focus is back on BP 1.6 as the thing needing a fix.

I also faced the same problem (Fatal error – could not locate a function / invalid function call (bp – member something) inside the plugin directories – sorry I didn’t copy the error message) and couldn’t access admin, and moreover if I went to view member’s activity, I was just getting the message – No activity found. I haven’t installed the plugin S2member on my site, so that couldn’t be the reason for this error, though I have the Members plugin to tweak user roles. I have rolled back to version 1.5.7 and seems to work fine now and thankfully the site activity was fine as before. Hope this gets resolved and I would be glad to use ver 1.6.

Just throwing this in here but is S2 member (or those others) updated for BuddyPress 1.6? http://www.s2member.com/forums/topic/buddypress-1-6/ seems to indicate to me no.

I’ve now posted something on the S2Member forums letting them know about the specific issue and asking for a timescale fix: http://www.s2member.com/forums/topic/buddypress-1-6-errors/

Thanks for all your help Karmtosed, sorry to have wasted any of your time digging for something that wasn’t BP’s wrongdoing.

No problem, not a waste at all. Glad hopefully we’ve got you in the right direction as to getting a resolution.
