[Resolved] WordPress and BuddyPress broke – New Installation (no other plugins)

I just installed a brand new WordPress & BuddyPress site and nothing is working now… I can’t access my site’s admin pages (e.g. mydomain.com/wp-admin) as I get the following error:
HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error)

When visiting the domain (e.g. mydomain.com) there is no content. No HTML is present at all when I view the page source. Originally when I installed BP, the site was working. I changed the name of the BP plugin directory to ../wp-content/plugins/buddypress-xx in order to access my WP admin/dashboard pages. I made no changes while in the admin area; I just wanted to make sure it was BP that was messing stuff up.

I don’t have any other plugins. I even deleted the original plugin(s) WordPress includes with their download before installing BP. This is a brand new domain, with literally no modifications other than the installation of WP & BP.

Versions are as follows (both are newest available versions as of today, 2-8-12):
    WP 3.3.1
    BP 1.5.3.1

Other sites on the same server are currently up and running, so there are no problems with the server itself.

Does anyone have any idea why this is not working or how to fix it? Again, all I want is to be able to have both the WP dashboard & the BP plugin to both work at the same time. Thanks in advance!

Thank you, but still having problems. :-(

I removed everything from the server and started over. I completed the BuddyPress Setup steps and when I clicked Finish & Activate I got the same 500 error.

Afterwards I updated wp-config.php, the .htaccess file, & upped the memory limits for the site. I tried in different browsers, but to no avail. I don’t have access to my php.ini file, so I’m hoping that’s not the problem. The site seems to be working fine, but the dashboard is still not functional.

Here are the errors I got from the error log:
[Thu Feb 09 18:21:21 2012] [warn] mod_fcgid: stderr: PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function bp_is_active() in /home/httpd/vhosts/mydomain.com/httpdocs/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-core/admin/bp-core-admin.php on line 45

Please forgive my idiocy, but I have no clue what to make of that. Please help! :-) Are you able to tell what the problem is from those error logs?

    Thanks again!

It was the php.ini file. Thanks.
