Whilst I can’t say for sure it’s probably better to be safe and download versions from the codex here. https://codex.buddypress.org/version/1-5-7/ and other versions are kept.
what about the database? I’m worried that it will just get worst.
What exactly broke with your templates? If it’s a genuine problem, we can’t fix what people don’t tell.
too many, first is the profile at the front end view. i can’t display the image and other menus new to this version. you can try visiting blogdia.org or blogdia.org/forum
what I noticed until now:

not existing anymore
so basically loads of cuntions to display user profile elements in my templates.
No documentation on this found anywhere yet. It is very risky to update to this version at this time.

Some style from my template do get overwritten though. from what I can see
and that’s why i regretted it updating to this version.
First, activate BP-default and test to make sure it’s your theme causing your issues
