Search can´t tell the difference between O and Ö

Is there a way to stop BuddyPress search function from returning unwanted search results? Or to teach it “new” letters? Or should I do something about my database settings?
It turns out that my BuddyPress installation cannot tell the difference between the Swedish character “Ö” (& ouml;) and a common O. Example: A search for Gotland will return Östergötland. That is not good, people might think I do not know anything about geography…
