Send to input in compose message not working?

    The send to input which allows you to type usernames and it gives you suggestions is not working. If I click on any of the usernames suggested by it and send a message it gives error Message could not be sent because you have entered an invalid username. Please try again. If I ignore the suggestions and type the full username then it works. Why is that happening?
    Also there is an extra   before the username in the suggested username in the source code. Is this responsible for the error?
    This problem was there with BP 2.5.3 and now with 2.6 also

    can u shift to default wp 2016 theme and see if the issue remains?

    this would be mostly a plugin conflict imo
