Setup BuddyPress Forum without bbPress

    Hello all,

i am trying to setup a forum with BuddyPress. After I read a lot about BuddyPress and bbPress I managed it easily to set up a forum together with both Plugins. However I read here: https://codex.buddypress.org/legacy/getting-started/buddypress-forum/

“…because [now] bbPress’s functions are available right within BuddyPress”

That sounds to me, that it should be possible to set a forum with BuddyPress standalone, without installing bbPress, isn’t it?

If it isn’t possible I will use bbPress furthermore. But if it is possible to set up a nice looking forum without bbPress I would like to set it up standalone without bbPress, because every plugin you dont need is a further security risk and needs to be updated and managed.

So I searched for that, but wasnt able to find something about it and I hope you could clarify if it is possible and how?

    Best regards,

    hi @fox_black

i’m pleased to see that you read the Codex. But sorry for your mention, there is also written a few words before: In BuddyPress 1.1 this all works with one click.

And if not enough, the paragraph title is Introduction for Forums in BP 1.2+

As of june 2015, current BuddyPress version is 2.3.1 and there is no forum included in BuddyPress, reason why you haven’t find any information.

Further on Codex you can read:
There are a couple of reasons why you might want to consider migrating to the bbPress plugin:

bbPress is being actively developed; the “Discussion Forums” component in BuddyPress is retiring as of BuddyPress 1.7. The retired component will continue to work, but no new features will be incorporated by the BuddyPress team.
bbPress has a bunch of cool features that BP Discussion Forums doesn’t: extensive moderation via the WP admin dashboard, topic splitting, revisions, spam management, favorites, subscriptions, and more.
    See: https://codex.buddypress.org/legacy/getting-started/using-bbpress-2-2-with-buddypress/

If you want a forum aside BP you have to use a forum plugin and bbPress is recommended for that.

Thank you very much for your answer!

I thougth first that with BP 1.1 and higher you can now use a forum from within a component of buddypress directly instead of using bbPress.

I thank you, that you clarified that. So I will use bbPress furthermore 🙂

    Best reagards,
