Several issues

    Hello,

    I’m hoping someone can help me with a major problems that I’m encountering with my BP installation.

    I’m running WordPress MU 2.8.4. and BuddyPress 1.0.3

    1) After registering, when a user gets the “Activate avatar” e-mail and clicks on the link they see their avatar. It’s uploaded just fine but the cropping tool is missing! So after proceeding you end up with the infamous bacl box. If you click on change avatar, this time it works fine and cropping tool functions properly.

    2) Another cropping tool problem. This time with groups. The group avatar is uploaded fine. The cropping tool functions fine. Once you click on “Crop Full Size and Save” a new page comes up with:

    Are you sure you want to do this?

    Please try again.

    You click on Please try again. and it takes you back. Same thing happens if you try again.

    If you skip this step and finish creating the group. Then go to admin->group avatar and upload and crop the avatar it works fine.

    3)Is the the abillity of users to delete their account disabled by default? If so how do I enable this? This is very important. I have seen it in another installation of BP.

    For example: http://bp-dev.org/members/MEMBERNAME/settings/delete-account

    However that page is missing in my installation but the code seems to be in the core files.

    4) How can I disable/remove the activity labels across the board that display “active X time ago”. Most users obviously want to hide their online status and don’t want others to see when they logged in and for how long. Ideally this would be a user defined setting but since it’s not, how can I disable this?

    1) What is “Activate avatar” e-mail? I’ve never heard it nor seen it on any of my bp installs so far.

    2) maybe you need to reinstall buddypress. Or use 1.1 rc for better usability.

    3) Global configuration option to enable/disable self user account deletion is introduced from 1.1. Are you sure you are running 1.0.3, as it doesn’t even offer you such option. Users can just click to delete.

    4) You can simply delete those functions from theme files, or maybe better hack available. Check for sticky posts.

    1) 2) is solved in BP 1.1. see https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/better-avatar-crop-function

    3) Well I wanted to refer to the user settings, where the user-delf-delete checkbox was in 1.0.3. But in 1.1 Ican’t find it anymore even though the self deletion is activated in buddypress’ backend settings. What happended to it?

    4) The simplest way would be CSS (the activity remains in the code, though)

    BuddyPress v1.1–shipping shortly!–has an entirely new avatar cropper. It should solve the issues you are currently having with 1.0.3.

    Regarding your 3rd question, the “Delete Account” feature works fine in all versions of BP. I assume you are logging into your BP install as the Site Admin. If so, that is why you do not see this feature.

    If the Site Admin where allowed to delete their account–and actually did so–it would be very problematic. So, BP checks to see if the current viewing users is the Site Admin, and if it is, it does not render the “Delete Account” submenu under “Settings”.

    Since I have customized BP quite a lot (no admin bar, so all the links are in the individual pages etc.) I’m quite scared of upgrading to 1.1. Will an upgrade to 1.1 only overwrite my changes to the “core” files in plugins/buddypress? It wont affect anything in bp-themes/mytheme correct? Can I backup plugins/buddypress and then restore it if 1.1 completely messes up my installation?

    #4 Can you give me pointers? Couldn’t find any past posts dealing with this issue. Any global configs? This feature is going to keep away a lot of users from actively participating unless I find a way to disable it.

    3) Backup, backup, and backup. Try it, if not working, then return it back.

    4) I don’t think there’re posts on the forums. BuddyPress doesn’t have theme options as in other themes. You have to edit it. Use Firefox/Firebug to find what to edit.

    #4 is resolved too.

    So my biggest headache is the cropping tool.

    As a workaround I removed the abillity to upload an avatar/profile picture during registration since it uploaded a black box.

    User are able to upload and crop an avatar but virtually every single one is complainging about that function. Multiple issues.

    I tried to upgrade to 1.1 but it was too problematic. Got way too many errors all over the place. It’s tough to upgrade with a custom theme, especially when I have also modified core files. In the near future I’d like to offer an expert here a generous bounty to do the upgrade for me while maintaining all customizations of my theme. I have over a hundred active members now so hopefully this can be tested remotely, but I digress.

    Question, is it possible to replace the crappy cropping tool of 1.0.3 without upgrading to 1.1 ? There must be others in my situation who are unable to upgrade to 1.1 but would like to get a better cropping tool.

    Anything is possible if you have the coding skills. But, your best option is to upgrade to BP 1.1.1.

    What is the issue you are having with upgrading? Just theme issues? Or, as you stated above, are you concerned about losing the core file modifications that you’ve made?

    You should never–did I say never yet–modify any core files. Instead, make your custom mods in your own plugin file or in bp-custom.php file.

    I was shoping it’s a matter of replacing some core files or perhaps there’s some obscure plugin somewhere.

    Multiple theme issues and various other problems. Registration errored out etc. I’m also concerned about losing the core modifications as well. Unfortunately I haven’t researched the custom mod/plugin route.

    I really want to upgrade. I’m very interested in the future BP releases with privacy features. I need to figure out a way to reproduce the site locally or elsewhere and test it out until I come up with a procedure for upgrading. There’s no way I can do it on the live site.
