Shared users on multiple sites

I apologize if this is a common question. I searched the forum with no luck.
I am building a network of sites(not currently sure if I am going to use multisite). I want my users to have a shared account across all of my sites. I don’t want them to have to signup and create profiles on several sites.
Ideally, they would be able to log into any site to access their profile and interact with other users.
Is this functionality capable with buddypress? Do I need to use multisite to make it work?
