Should I really be using Buddypress?

In fiddling around with buddypress for some time now through reading bits of documentation and purveying various themes and plugins, I’m beginning to see that although buddypress supports unique page design, its user-interface definitely biases towards a uniform theme that pervades the whole site. I see that individual page layouts/content can be edited better through some plugins and template design, but in order to do so, it requires not only that you know a little bit of coding yourself but ALSO that you’re working within the wordpress CMS framework.
For someone who wants a lot of control on his site, this begins to seem a daunting task to really get things the way I want. In fact, it almost seems I would be better hard-coding my own html layouts and cms styles from scratch and then inserting the necessary php-work without using any CMS. At least what I would be learning would be the actual logic/coding of the sites mechanics, and not such PLUS the wordpress/buddypress mechanics.
But what do you think– does it sound as if I should bite the bullet and learn buddypress, or bite the other bullet and learn much more hard-coding to design without a CMS (although that would obviously take much much longer)?
