Show Updates Only?

I desperately need to show only ‘updates’ on the activity stream, it would be nice to get rid of that selection box entirely. When members post on my site, even if the selection box is on ‘updates’, it switches back to ‘everything’ as soon as they click inside the text area.
Can you tell me how to banish that evil selection box from my site, and have the default selection pinned to ‘updates’? http://www.knack-shack.com/submissions/
