Showing number of Group activity stream updates since last visited

Hi,
I wanted to show an indicator for each group in a member’s groups listing page that shows how many group activity stream updates have occurred for each group since that user last visited the single Group page. It could say something like “# new updates” for each group listed on the user’s Groups listing page. (Bonus points for also being able to show a truncated snippet of the most recent activity for each specific group)
Have scoured the forums and the web for snippets I could use of this, but not finding anything that could specifically address this question. Appreciate any help in advance.
