Site wide forums not working

Hi. I’ve been batteling with this for hours now, and I would really appreciate any assistance or suggestions getting this to work. When I set up my installation of Buddypress, I chose to enable both group and site-wide forums. After getting to grips with how this will work, I decided to rather have one central forum and uninstalled group forums. Now however it seems that the forums are still connected to groups and bbPress reports “Possible BuddyPress conflict: Forums page” None of the Forums I set up in the bbPress Forums admin page shows up and when I try to post to the forums it still requires group membership.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Justin.

  • How did you “uninstall” group forums?

Hi Paul. In the BuddyPress menu, I clicked on ‘Uninstall Group Forums’. However, this process doesn’t seem to work. When I log out and back in again, I again have the option to uninstall. This confirms my suspicion that it’s in fact not being uninstalled. Any ideas?

You also need delete the bb-config.php file at root of WP install as well (same level you find wp-config.php in).

    Hi Mecrime

I deleted the bb-config.php as suggested. Now however when I click on ‘Forums’ I get taken to the profile page of the logged in user. I tried to also unsinstall the bbPress plugin and reinsstalled and created a new forum but the problem persists. Let me know if I could allow you in to have a look at it.

    Thanks,
    Justin.

Quick update. The ‘Forums’ link I clicked on was a custom menu. After deleting the custom menu, Forums does not show in the menu at all. When navigating to ‘Settings, Forums’ I still get the ‘Possible BuddyPress conflict: Forums page’ message. I hope this makes sense.

Hi Guys. Is there anything else you can think of? Thanks for the help so far.

Hi Guys. As a test I now installed a fresh copy of BuddyPress plus bbPress on a different domain and I have the exact same problem there. This time I did not run the Group Forum installation. Hope this helps. Please let me know. I’m desperate to get this working.

    Thanks,
    Justin.

the solution to your pain may be found at:
    http://wpmu.org/guide-to-buddypress-forums-how-to-set-up-group-or-sitewide-forums/

    especially the para:

Setting up sitewide forums can be a bit tricky. After you install and activate bbPress, you’ll need to add the bbPress shortcode for your forums index to that page:
    [bbp-forum-index]
Check your bbPress settings page in the dashboard to see if you’ve got a page/slug conflict with BuddyPress. If you have any trouble, you may want to try unticking the Discussion Forum box in the Components setup page. I’ve found that this helps users who are getting the error: “The forums component has not been set up yet.” I’m sure this process will be smoother in the future, but for now that hint may come in handy.

I was running into the same issue as you, and this solved it.
    Good luck!
