So frustrating – Buddypress not working out of the box as advertised
-
I’ve posted on another forum but maybe this link is more appropriate.
I’ve set everything up on http://solarpowernewsonline.com/ as far as I can see that it be fully working (it is without Buddypress). BUT basic functionality of Buddypress is not as it should be…
For instance Blog Tracking is not happening at all across the site – when every setting suggest this should be happenning automatically. It simply isn’t!
Also, “Activity” works from the Administrator’s blob page but not from the other Blogger pages…
Sorry but how on earth can I get this basic functionality to work?
Thanks, Tim

OK – I’m new here, and everything’s quite standard….
1. Which version of WP/MU are you running? – WordPress MU 2.9.2.
2. Did you install WP/MU as a directory or subdomain install? directory
3. If a directory install, is it in root or in a subdirectory? ? Don’t follow? Please explain… (blogs are in format *.domain.com/blogs/)
4. Did you upgraded from a previous version of WP/MU? If so, from which version? NA
5. Was WP/MU functioning properly before installing/upgrading BuddyPress (BP)? e.g. permalinks, creating a new post, commenting. Yes
6. Which version of BP are you running? Version 1.2.3
7. Did you upgraded from a previous version of BP? If so, from which version? NA
8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated? Contact Form 7 & WordPress Hashcash
9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes? The standard Demo theme
10. Have you modified the core files in any way? No
11. Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php? no
12. If running bbPress, which version? Or did your BuddyPress install come with a copy of bbPress built-in? No
13. Please provide a list of any errors in your server’s log files. NA
14. Which company provides your hosting? wpwebhost.com/
For instance Blog Tracking is not happening at all across the site – when every setting suggest this should be happenning automatically. It simply isn’t!
Are the blogs, that aren’t appearing, marked as “private” in their admin? i.e. the “Hide from search engines option”.
No – I’d already tried that thanks….
3. If a directory install, is it in root or in a subdirectory? ? Don’t follow? Please explain… (blogs are in format *.domain.com/blogs/)
What that means is did you activate BuddyPress in blog_id_1 (the main blog) or in a sub-blog? If you activated BP in sub-blog, did you define it in wp-config.php?
define ( 'BP_ROOT_BLOG', $blog_id );
$blog_id = just the number
In the main blog (administrator’s blog)….
The administrator’s main dashboard page is at:
http://solarpowernewsonline.com/blogs/wp-admin/
Hop you can help!
Thanks, Tim
I’d be grateful for any help…..
everything indicates that Blog tracking just works if not disabled so really I’m stuck.
I’ve made a workaround, not a solution, by removing the Blogs tag, adding user blog domains to profiles, and making Activity the home page.
… I don’t know if it’s a clue, but activities are also not working in the other user blog pages.
But, come on people, this all should be automated – and working. It’s the promise of the product….
[EDIT]
It appears you’re using a subdomain install and not a subdirectory:
http://project2.solarpowernewsonline.com/
http://project1.solarpowernewsonline.com/
Also when you go to:
http://project2.solarpowernewsonline.com/blogs
http://project1.solarpowernewsonline.com/blogs
They both link to the same thing as the subdomain URL… how did you setup your permalinks?
—
Your “Activity” link problem occurs because you’re trying to use the BP default theme as a user blog theme, which will not work.
If you want to use the BP default theme as a user blog theme, create a child theme and strip out the BP nav links:
Thanks I hope you’re helping shed light on the issues ….
1.
It appears you’re using a subdomain install and not a subdirectory:
http://project2.solarpowernewsonline.com/
http://project1.solarpowernewsonline.com/
OK.
2.
Also when you go to:
http://project2.solarpowernewsonline.com/blogs
http://project1.solarpowernewsonline.com/blogs
They both link to the same thing as the subdomain URL.. how did you setup your permalinks?
That’s not the case. These are two blogs as you can see from the URL. .. that’s where they go to.
3.
Permalinks are set up as Day and name http://solarpowernewsonline.com/blogs/2010/04/09/sample-pos (pretty much everything is a clean fresh default installation.)
4. If you want to use the BP default theme as a user blog theme, create a child theme and strip out the BP nav links:
OK – but why isn’t this mentioned anywhere on installing? (rhetorical).
So:
1. Not sure where that helps.
2. Confused,
3. Day and name.
4. I’ll try that.
The main outstanding issue though – and I know I’ve disabled it for now – is that Blog tracking is not functioning!
Ahh….
OK – I just noticed in your comment on:
http://project2.solarpowernewsonline.com/blogs
http://project1.solarpowernewsonline.com/blogs
the /blogs part is added by default because the installation is in a folder called /blogs in the public html folder. I’ve now changed that and enabled blog tracking – but without effect as the BASIC functionality still does not work.
Another factor to bear in mind that needs fixing is that following your instructions for removing the default tabs on the default theme (as noted by another forum user) has had the effect of replacing each blog title with the main blog title. This (too) needs to be fixed.
Tim
It’s not the best thing to install WPMU in a subdirectory when you’re using a subdomain install.
Is there a valid reason why you’re not installing WPMU in the root?
Also because you installed WPMU in a subdirectory called “blogs”, it is conflicting with the BP_BLOGS_SLUG, which by default is also called “blogs”.
Either install WPMU in the root, or install WPMU in a different subdirectory name or try renaming your BP_BLOGS_SLUG to something else to “user-blogs”.
To rename the BP_BLOGS_SLUG to something else, add the following to wp-config.php:
define ( 'BP_BLOGS_SLUG', 'user-blogs' );
Re: the blog title, change that yourself by using this function:
echo get_bloginfo('name');
There is a valid reason why I put it in a sub-directory – as every instruction suggest to do so, and that’s how I’ve always installed WP (with a modification to the .htaccess file).
I’ve moved the files to the root but the installation is shot to pieces now so I might as well start again.
I check back to see if this fixes things.
Thanks
