Start up help for newbie plz!

Hi could someone plz tell me the correct installation sequence. I have a domain and it used to be a blog (not live at present) and wish to convert it to a community site so have downloaded some templates. Where/when do I install the buddtypress download?
Is buddy press a function template code that uses the wordpress engine and any theme template will simply install over that same as a wordpress blog?

Install wordpress on your server.
Once done, hit the Plugins -> Add a Plugin tab and type in buddypress.Download and install and you’re good to go
