Strange Characters when using bp_group_has_members() function

So I’m using the exact code from here (with a couple of parameters) : http://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/custom-buddypress-loops/the-group-members-loop-bp_group_has_members/
When calling this function it returns the correct results but I’m getting a heap of black diamonds with white question marks in them; http://i.imgur.com/Zx67Z.jpg

. When I locally change the page encoding through chrome ( spanner -> tools -> encoding -> to ‘Western (ISO-8859-1)’) they disappear.Anyone have a solution to this or should I change the just change the page encoding?
