Theme Creation Help!

I run a site over at http://gm-press.info/
It is a site that hosts blogs for game developers to help them get more exposure in a social community. I would like to get a new theme but my hand at creating them isn’t working. So I was wondering if you could check out this picture and give me some pointers. This is just a mock-up.

This appears to be a job for a child theme of the bp-default and start changing the css in a newly created styles.css file.

Hopefully that should get you started.
